5 Mistakes in Social Media Marketing - Facebook

Friday, July 9, 2010 by Robert Fleming

#1 - A inappropriate profile photo or graphic.   This applies to your group page, company page and personal profile graphic.  It should represent you.  Your company pages should usually have a logo and your personal page a good head shot.

#2 - Relying on Groups instead of Pages.  Groups have a 5,000 limit, pages have none, focus on pages for the best results.

#3 - Not monitoring your social impact.  There are plenty of companies that will take your money to monitor your presence on the web, however here is a free one you can try www.howsociable.com/

#4 - Constantly selling. It is "marketing" but social networks are a little different.  Lighten up with photos of your employees at conferences and trade shows (like the eMA annual conference), use discounts and free offers, and respond to discussions and posts.

#5 - Rarely updating your page. Its social because people want to interact, try to add some value every day.
