Social Media is Not New

Friday, May 13, 2011 by Robert Fleming

I am hearing a lot about the "newness" of social.  The reality is that it's been around since 1971, when the first two emails were sent to computers sitting right next to each other.  In 1978 the "bulletin board" system (BBS),exchanged real time conversations over phone modems with other people, thousands of these boards operated into the mid eighties.  In 1994, GeoCities was founded allowing people to create pages and interact with other people using graphics and rich media.  In 1997 AOL instant messenger was launched, that allowed for IM's to appear on computers.  Also in that year 6 degrees was launched, a site where you could list friends and create a profile for yourself.  In 2002 Friendster was launched, growing to 3 million users in the first three months.  Friendster  pioneered the concept of "online friends", over 9 years ago. In 2003 MySpace was launched by an Internet marketing firm.  In 2004 Facebook was launched, originally as a way of connecting college students.  In 2006 Twitter was launched, and in 2008 Facebook overtook MySpace as the leading social network.

There you have it.  Social media has been around for a long time.  Social Marketing however, is relatively new in any substantial form.
