There has been a lot of criticism of the new iPod Nano, after all it is a downgrade from a feature perspective. No Camera, no video, no games, no calender. So why is it better? Most of us that use the Nano, use it for music, the screen was not big enough to watch a movie and the video was mediocre at best. Games were ok, but who really used the calender? The new nano is well, simply a better music player, which is what most of us used it for anyway. Its better because it's much smaller and easier to carry, it sounds better and it is significantly easier to navigate. It provides photos, music and a clock. I am waiting for the company that makes a case that is a watch band for the thing. Anyway, I have used one for about 3 days now and find it to be the best music device ever made, even if I can't make a video on it. Check out our conference and see how you can get an Apple iPad for free at the event.

#1 - Picking the wrong conference. If you are looking for a basic level event, an advanced level event or a trade show make sure your selection meets your goals. Large trade shows can be great for picking up swag and large parties, but rarely give you advanced level attendees. If attendees can register for free, you know there will be a lot of entry level people at the event.
#2 - Forgetting business cards. This sounds like a no brainier but I can't tell you how many times I have asked for someones card at an event and they have not had one.
#3 - Not preparing. A conference or trade show is a expensive trip. Be sure you have your goals and objectives worked out in advance. I
#4 - Not Participating. If you don't network, ask questions attend functions and round tables, you will not get the most out of your conference experience.
#5 - Not following up. So you have attended the conference and met a lot of people, and have a lot of cards. Do you just file them in your desk drawer? Send everyone you meet a short email it may be the start of something substantial.

#1 - Sending email on the wrong day. - Overall, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays are your best bet for sending emails.
#2 - Using spam words. - When you use words like "sweepstakes" "win" or my all time favorite "Viagra"in the body or subject line of your email, it will be blocked by many servers and never reach your list. Even if it does, email client software is likely to put it in the spam or junk mail folder.
#3 - Using too many links. - Overall people are wary of clicking on email links (due to virus concerns), when you provide no content and just links, your email is headed for the trash.
#4 - Sending too many emails. - This is the best way to turn off your customers, few people want to hear from you 4 time a week. Shoot for a maximum of 1 email a week or less.
#5 - Using cheesy subject lines. - Have you been "selected" - "chosen" or lucky. Put a relevant subject in the subject line and your email will have a much greater chance of success. Don't ignore the "from" line either, more people look at that first in deciding whether or not to read your email.
#1 -
Banal Tweets. - Really, no one cares what you had for breakfast, and if they do, how about sending them a private message. There is a level of Minutiae, that really is boring to most of your followers
#2 -
Over Tweeting. - It is alright to announce a new product or event, but doing it multiple times a day can get you un-followed very quickly. Shoot for between 3 and 12 tweets a day or risk overexposure.
#3 -
Over Linking - When you send out a link of interest, please describe it in enough detail so your followers can decide whether or not to click your link. Descriptions like "oh this is funny" are not descriptive enough to most followers. Try "this is a funny story about the eMarketing Association, etc."
#4 -
Bad Profile Photos and Information - Once again, your profile should represent you and/or your company. It's even a good idea to provide employees w of your company that are tweeting a template that shows where they work, here is how Kodak does it:

#5 -
Adding no value. You will be successful on Twitter if you understand your followers needs for information and offer them good answers to questions and quality advice and resources.
#1 -
A inappropriate profile photo or graphic. This applies to your group page, company page and personal profile graphic. It should represent you. Your company pages should usually have a logo and your personal page a good head shot.
#2 -
Relying on Groups instead of Pages. Groups have a 5,000 limit, pages have none, focus on pages for the best results.
#3 -
Not monitoring your social impact. There are plenty of companies that will take your money to monitor your presence on the web, however here is a free one you can try
www.howsociable.com/#4 -
Constantly selling. It is "marketing" but social networks are a little different. Lighten up with photos of your employees at conferences and trade shows (like the eMA annual conference), use discounts and free offers, and respond to discussions and posts.
#5 -
Rarely updating your page. Its social because people want to interact, try to add some value every day.

By now we have all heard about the iPhone antenna issue. I use a Blackberry 9700 and if you put your fingers in the upper right hand corner of the receiver your signal will drop by about 50% or more. So as Apple has stated this is an issue with all cell phones.

Last week, I left my laptop at home and traveled to Chicago, with only an iPad. I also brought along a Bluetooth keyboard. I may never bring a laptop on a business trip again. The iPad easily handled my email, web research, news, weather, flight status, and much more. Videos looked great, and can be downloaded and rented directly on the iPad. Since I was doing a presentation on eMarketing, social marketing and search, I came across a great app that can be very useful if you do presentations. It’s called ProPrompter and it works just like a real teleprompter, you can adjust backgrounds, type, scroll speed etc., a nice app if you give talks, speeches or presentations.
On the subject of presentations, we are looking for moderators for our round-table discussions at the Power of eMarketing Conference to be held in Baltimore October 20th and 21st . If you have experience in moderating small groups in the social, email or search marketing arenas and are interested in moderating one of our panels, email me at: fleming at eMarketingAssociation.com, send along a bio and list of your speaking experience.
