#1 - Picking the wrong conference. If you are looking for a basic level event, an advanced level event or a trade show make sure your selection meets your goals. Large trade shows can be great for picking up swag and large parties, but rarely give you advanced level attendees. If attendees can register for free, you know there will be a lot of entry level people at the event.
#2 - Forgetting business cards. This sounds like a no brainier but I can't tell you how many times I have asked for someones card at an event and they have not had one.
#3 - Not preparing. A conference or trade show is a expensive trip. Be sure you have your goals and objectives worked out in advance. I
#4 - Not Participating. If you don't network, ask questions attend functions and round tables, you will not get the most out of your conference experience.
#5 - Not following up. So you have attended the conference and met a lot of people, and have a lot of cards. Do you just file them in your desk drawer? Send everyone you meet a short email it may be the start of something substantial.
